Hypoallergenic Jewellery: Is 316L Steel Right for Sensitive Skin?

Jewellery from the GLOW collection by DANSK Copenhagen, arranged in a flatlay

  • Is DANSK Copenhagen jewellery hypoallergenic? Our jewellery is made from 316L stainless steel, which is hypoallergenic at material level – confirmed on each product page.
  • Can I shower with it? Yes. It is designed to be waterproof, so you can wear it in the shower, at the gym and in the sea.
  • Will it turn my skin green? 316L resists corrosion, so it isn't prone to the green marks some metals leave.
  • I have a nickel allergy. Check the material details on the product page, and talk to your doctor if your allergy is severe.

Itching or redness from jewellery can be the difference between wearing a design every day and leaving it in a drawer. This guide explains what hypoallergenic means, why some jewellery irritates the skin, and why DANSK Copenhagen – the Copenhagen jewellery brand founded in 1971 – makes its jewellery in 316L surgical steel.

What Does Hypoallergenic Jewellery Mean?

Hypoallergenic means a material is less likely to cause an allergic reaction – not that a reaction is impossible. No material suits every person, so the word describes a lower risk, not a guarantee.

A good everyday material does two things: it keeps common allergens to a minimum, and it stays stable against your skin through sweat, water and daily wear.

Why Does Some Jewellery Irritate the Skin?

Nickel is one of the most common causes of contact allergy, and it is used in many metal alloys. Symptoms range from mild itching and redness to a rash.

Corrosion plays a part too: when a metal surface breaks down through moisture and sweat, it can release particles that irritate the skin. The same process causes the green marks some jewellery leaves behind.

Is 316L Stainless Steel Hypoallergenic?

316L is a low-carbon grade of stainless steel, often called surgical steel. It is known for high corrosion resistance, so it stays stable through sweat, water and everyday wear.

That's why we chose it. Today, the full collection is made from 316L stainless steel – hypoallergenic at material level, confirmed on each product page. Read more about 316L surgical steel.

Made to Wear Every Day

  • Silver-tone designs are solid steel to the core, so they are tarnish-free.
  • Gold designs are 18K ION plated on the same steel, so they are tarnish-resistant.
  • Waterproof by design: keep them on through showers, swims and workouts.

FAQ

What does hypoallergenic mean?

A material that is less likely to cause an allergic reaction. It lowers the risk, but no material is guaranteed to suit everyone.

Is DANSK Copenhagen jewellery hypoallergenic?

Our jewellery is made from 316L stainless steel, which is hypoallergenic at material level. This is confirmed on each product page.

Can I wear 316L jewellery if I have a nickel allergy?

Check the material details on the product page. If you have a confirmed or severe nickel allergy, ask your doctor before wearing any metal jewellery.

Is surgical steel the same as 316L stainless steel?

Yes. Surgical steel is a common name for 316L, a low-carbon grade of stainless steel.

Why does some jewellery turn my skin green?

Metals such as copper can oxidise and react with moisture and the skin. 316L resists corrosion, so it isn't prone to leaving green marks.

Can I shower with my jewellery on?

Yes. Our 316L jewellery is designed to be waterproof, so you can keep it on in the shower, at the gym and in the sea.
