What Jewellery Is Hypoallergenic? A Guide for Sensitive Skin

What Jewellery Is Hypoallergenic? - DANSK Copenhagen

Hypoallergenic jewellery is made from metals that rarely cause skin reactions. The safest choices are 316L stainless steel, titanium and solid gold. Most reactions come from nickel, which is common in cheap alloys, brass and some silver.

Every design from DANSK Copenhagen is made from 316L stainless steel, hypoallergenic and waterproof.

Which metals are safe for sensitive skin?

Metal Good for sensitive skin? Why
316L stainless steel Yes Stable, smooth and gentle on most skin
Titanium Yes Very stable, often used for first piercings
Solid gold (14K and up) Usually Few reactions, but expensive
Sterling silver Sometimes Can contain other metals and tarnishes
Brass and copper Often not Can irritate and leave green marks
Unknown "fashion metal" Often not May contain nickel

Why does jewellery irritate the skin?

Nickel is the most common trigger. It can sit in the base metal or in a plating that wears through. Sweat, heat and moisture make a reaction more likely, which is why earrings and rings often react first.

Is gold plated jewellery hypoallergenic?

It depends on the metal underneath. Gold plating on brass can irritate once the surface wears. 18K ION-plated gold on 316L steel stays gentle, because the steel underneath is gentle too. Read more in is gold plated jewellery hypoallergenic?

Do hypoallergenic rings tarnish?

Not when they are 316L steel. Our silver tone is the natural colour of the steel, solid to the core, so it is tarnish-free. Our 18K ION-plated gold resists tarnishing.

What can make a ring look dull is a film of soap, lotion or hand cream. A rinse in warm water with a drop of mild soap brings back the shine. Browse hypoallergenic rings.

How to shop for sensitive skin

  • Look for the grade. "Stainless steel" is vague; "316L" tells you what you get.
  • Check the whole design. Posts, hooks and clasps touch the skin too.
  • Choose waterproof. Jewellery that handles water keeps its surface smooth through sweat and showers.
  • Start with earrings. If your ears are happy, the rest usually follows. See best earrings for sensitive ears.
